KULIM, (Bernama) -- The Haringaroo joint military exercise by the Australian and Malaysian Army would use a new format and be extended to two weeks instead of the current one week duration.

Sixth Brigade Commander Brigadier General Datuk Tajri Alwi said the new format would include offensive training as well and a longer duration which would enable the personnel to gain more military knowledge.

Tajri was speaking to reporters at the closing ceremony of the Haringaroo, officiated by the Australian High Commission''s Defense Attache Colonel Stephen Tulley at Padang Meha, Padang Serai near here today.

Tulley in his speech, recalled the long close ties the Australian and Malaysian army shared for decades, through war and peace.

He said both armies had gone through happy and sad times including World War II, the emergency and the Indonesia-Malaysia Confrontation besides at many other locations such as Somali, Timur-Leste, Bosnia, Sudan and Afghanistan.

He praised the Malaysian army personnel for their full cooperation and discipline during the training despite the many rigours they had to go through.

Second Division Base liaison officer Mejar Rodiah Abdullah said almost 500 personnel took part in the exercise which began June 8 and ended today.
