An undisclosed member of the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) has just taken delivery of its first batch of Aerospatiale Missiles Eryx short-range anti-tank guided weapons (ATGWs). This is the first order to be placed by a country in the Middle East for the Eryx. Prior to selecting the Eryx ATGW, the undisclosed member of the GGC (which comprises Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates), evaluated Eryx in competition with other anti-tank systems against stationary and moving targets under day and night conditions.

This latest order brings the total Eryx order book to 48,000missiles and 1,600 firing posts, of which 25,000 missiles and 1,600firing posts have so far been manufactured at Aerospatiale's Bourgesfacility.

Eryx has been bought by Brazil, Canada, France, Malaysia, Norway and Turkey. The weapon has a minimum range of 25m and a maximum range of 600m and has a tandem high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) warhead to defeat targets fitted with explosive reactive armour (ERA) and a day/night sighting system.

It has a soft launch capability which allows it to be launched from within a confined space such as a building. The main 135mm HEAT warhead will penetrate over 900mm of steel protected by ERA.
